When I think about my life, it seems a bit unusual that I ended up in photography and videography. It's ironic because I have always disliked being in front of the camera. Some may find it strange for someone who prefers to be behind the lens to choose this career path. However, it's my passion for creating compelling images without being the focus that has inspired me to embrace this fascinating profession. Let's take a closer look at how I found my way into the world of cameras and the creative outlets they offer.
The Artistic Freedom of Photography
The artistic freedom photography provides was a significant factor in my decision to become a photographer. With a camera in hand, I feel like I possess a brush and a canvas (although I'm not much of a painter...). Each photograph I capture feels like a masterpiece in progress, whether it’s a serene landscape with golden light bouncing off the snowy mountains or a bird of prey hunting for it's next meal.
This art form allows me to explore various perspectives and manipulate composition, colors, and emotions. For instance, the image below was taken on a crisp winters morning, where the air was thick with a dense sea mist that canopied Swansea city centre, allowing the tallest building in Wales to stand tall above the mist, creating a perfect moment to capture. Each shot encourages a fresh creative approach, making photography my canvas where my imagination can flourish.

The Thrill of the Chase
Another exhilarating part of working with cameras is the thrill of the chase. Photography is all about capturing fleeting moments that can vanish in an instant. There's a rush of excitement in being out in the world, carefully observing my surroundings and waiting for that perfect shot.
The joy of photography lies in the adventure, as much as in the final image. Whether I wander through the now bustling paths of the Brecon hills to snap breathtaking landscapes, or travel to somewhere remote is search of tranquility, each shutter click makes me feel alive.
Below the Surface: Exploring Videography
While photography has stolen my heart, I find my growing interest in videography to be a fantastic extension of my creative endeavors. Videography allows me to weave narratives through motion, transforming the idea of a single image into a dynamic storytelling experience.
With a camera, I move from capturing still moments to engaging with life’s movements. Videography gives endless opportunities for creative expression, whether I’m capturing important corporate media or producing stunning drone footage that showcases the beauty of Earths landscapes.

Technical Mastery Meets Creativity
Embarking on a career in photography and videography has pushed me to develop technical skills I never anticipated. The blend of creativity and technology is truly fascinating. Understanding camera settings, mastering lighting conditions, and honing post-production techniques are essential skills that require carefully weaving together to produce high-quality results.
For example, I've taken the time to learn how to balance ISO and shutter speed to achieve correctly exposed images in challenging lighting situations, such as shooting a sports event at night. The technical know-how complements my creative vision, making it easier to turn concepts into beautiful visuals. This ongoing learning journey keeps me engaged and evolving as an artist.
Embracing My Surroundings in Swansea
Living in Swansea enhances my experience as a photographer and videographer. The diverse landscapes—from the stunning Gower beaches to the charming countryside in the Brecon Beacons—provide endless inspiration. Each location has its own story to tell, and I feel privileged to share those narratives through my lens.
The vibrancy of Swansea and South Wales enriches my work throughout the seasons, each bringing new opportunities for creativity. I am truly blessed here with a variety of scenes to capture, from the warm hues of forest autumn leaves, to the cold snow capped hill tops a short drive away. It's about more than just capturing places; I aim to document the moments and emotions connected to these locations.

Building Connections Through My Work
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my career is the connections I build with people along the way. Photography and videography introduce me to incredible individuals who share their stories with me. Each subject has unique experiences that lend depth and authenticity to my work.
Whether I'm capturing corporate photos, attending local events, or collaborating with fellow creatives, these interactions enrich what I do. Each memorable click becomes a shared experience that resonates far beyond its visual impact.
The Role of a Drone Operator
In today's digital age, drone technology adds an exciting layer to my work. Working as a drone operator allows me to capture breathtaking aerial views that ground-level photography cannot match. The ability to glide high above landscapes creates stunning visuals that bring fresh perspectives to my projects.
The field of drone videography is constantly evolving. Understanding how to operate drones safely and effectively opens new creative avenues. For example, I recently completed some aerial filming for a small budget movie, capturing unique angles that will add depth and create interest for the viewer. The rich layer of aerial footage enhances my storytelling, making it more dynamic and captivating.
Dealing with the Ironic Fear of Being Photographed
I often find humor in my career choice, especially considering my dislike of being photographed. It’s an irony that spurs self-reflection and motivates me to push past discomfort. This experience has allowed me to empathize with my subjects, leading to more genuine expressions captured on camera.
Understanding how others may feel in front of the camera has made me a better photographer. When I approach sessions with kindness, the authenticity shines through the images. Ironically, my aversion has contributed to the sincerity of my work, transforming the captured moments into something truly special.
The Path Ahead in Photography and Videography
Looking forward in my career, I see countless opportunities for growth. Whether expanding my videography skills, mastering drone operation, or exploring new storytelling techniques, the possibilities excite me.
I want to continue my journey of uncovering stories and experiences around me. Collaborating with other creatives and diving into new projects will keep my passion alive, fueling my creative spirit. I am eager to see where this path will lead.
Final Thoughts
Choosing to work with cameras may seem like an odd choice for someone who dislikes being photographed. Yet, it has become a rewarding journey filled with creativity, exploration, and connection. From gaining artistic freedom in my photography to capturing life’s moments through videography, my love for this craft continues to flourish.
Infusing my work with stories, emotions, and artistry gives me a sense of purpose. Although I may shy away from the spotlight, the connections I build, the stories I tell, and the experiences I capture matter far more than being in the frame. I look forward to many more adventures behind the lens, excited to see where this journey might take me.
